Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent. Permanganate solution has an intense dark purple color. The solution will turn from purple to a faint color at the equivalence point. As such no further addition of indicator is needed for this titration. Permanganate acts as an internal or self indicator. In most chemical titrations, it requires indicators like methyl orange, phenolphthalein, bromophenol blue, starch, etc., which has separate colors in both acidic and alkaline mediums.

But, in case of permanganometric titration, the matter is different. Potassium permanganate is an exceptional chemical reagent.

The titration with other solutions (like sodium thiosuphate solution), requires an indicato such as methyl orange.
