Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea (110,860 square kilometers or 42,803 square miles). It covers an area slightly smaller than Pennsylvania and is also the island with the largest single nation population. In July 2014, Cuba had an estimated population around 11,047,251 people.

Today, Cuba is called a Marxist–Leninist one-party republic, where the role of the vanguard Communist Party is enshrined in its constitution. Also, independent observers continue to accuse the Cuban government of numerous human rights abuses, including torture and death. Working to change its image, Cuba is now acting like a developing country with a planned economy that is dominated by the exports of sugar, tobacco, coffee and skilled labor.
