was thinking the longer the distance the more time in flight . and my grandfathers chickens could fly quite far on the farm .

sweetqb, I can attest to that. At one stage in my life I decided to go into rare breeds. And the ones closest to the original breeds could fly rather well and were determined to roost in the highest trees.

You did not say DOMESTIC. Having had chickens, I am well aware that the fat domestic ladies cannot fly well. Those who are wilder breeds, can indeed get to 32 seconds, and frequently fly up into trees to roost.

Louis Michael Durocher,
At the University of Minnesota there are chickens that fly great distances and at night roost in surrounding trees, they are semi-wild,they were introduced to the University as a project and has laboratory animals,it's really cool to see them, they have developed their own society and people leave them be..

It should depend partially on the breed and the condition it’s in. I watched a Banty hen take off in February and fly nearly 1/2 mile when someone in a car took it’s hatchlings, but that was from the roof of the barn.

My chickens could go farther than that--especially when they saw my Momma coming with an ax.
