Kemijoki (River Kemi) is officially the undisputably longest river in Finland. It is located in Lapland, with a total length of 550 km. It is also the widest river in Finland, exceeding 1 km in several places. It flows to the Gulf of Bothnia. Baltic Sea, and has its mouth at the town of Kemi. The name "kemi" means "lowlands" or "river plateau" in the Sami language; the river is sided by flood plateaus. It floods every spring. It is an important fishing river.
Kemijoki is a rather rapid river, and several hydroelectric power plants have been built along the river. They provide a total of 34.5% of the Finnish hydroelectric power. The length of the river Tornionjoki is 572 km, but almost half of it is located in Sweden.
Kymijoki (River Kymi) is the largest river in Southern Finland, with the length of 223 km from Lake Kymi to Kotka, at the Gulf of Finland. But if we take into account the great lakes through which it runs - Ruotsalainen, Vesijärvi, Päijänne, Keitele, Pielavesi etc - the total route of Kymi exceeds 670 km and its watershed extends to Northern Savonia. "Kymi" means a large, wide river" in Old Finnish.
Kiiminkijoki is a river in Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. It has a length of 178 km, and it flows to the Gulf of Bothnia.
