What is the main component of glass?
Silica sand is the main component of glass as glass contains about 70% silica by weight. Soda is added during the glassmaking process in order to reduce the very high melting temperature of silica, while calcium carbonate is additionally used to give stability and consistency to the glass.
This can be interesting: Silica (SiO2) comes from quartz in sand. Other components needed are sodium oxide (Na2O) and 10.5% calcium oxide (CaO). Minor additives include 1.3% aluminum oxide (Al2O3), 0.3% potassium oxide (K2O), 0.2% sulfur trioxide (SO3), 0.2% magnesium oxide (MgO), 0.04% iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3), and 0.01% titanium oxide (TiO2).

james parrillo, Not a scientist. The best theory is that Phoenicians stopped on some Mediterranean beach and used natron (some form of sodium salt) blocks to hold up pots over their cooking fires. That sodium salt could melt a little, dissolving and lowering the melting point of the sand (almost all silica SO4)That could have formed a primitive shiny glass that attracted attention. The question should be more specific like common glass or window glass there being non silica glass including strangely enough hard caramel which is a organic glass. Candy and cake decorator eve blow figures out of it.
