Ischemic strokes are caused by a blockage in an artery (or, in rare cases, a vein). This type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain becomes blocked or "clogged". This blocked artery impairs blood flow to part of the brain causing the brain cells and tissues to begin to die within minutes from lack of oxygen. About 87% of all strokes are ischemic.

Hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel that supports the brain ruptures and bleeds into the brain. These are strokes caused by bleeding and about 13% of all strokes are hemorrhagic. Myocardial infarction and angina are types of heart problems that occur when the heart needs more oxygen than it can get causing a heart attack.
