The most populous city in the world is Tokyo, Japan with 38 million metropolitan area residents. The United Nations expects the Japanese capital of Tokyo to experience a population decline, but it has been stated that Tokyo will remain the world's most populous city area until about 2030.

Although Tokyo should keep its title as the world's most populous city area for the foreseeable future, the Indian capital of New Delhi is now predicted to rise from its current total of 25 million to 37 million in 2030. In fact, a United Nations report shows that the urban population of the world should grow significantly over the next few decades.

Tokyo with its population is being called a global city, world city, alpha city or world center. It continues to be a city generally considered as an important node in the world's global economic system. This concept comes from geography, human demographics, cultural studies and the idea that globalization can be understood as something that is largely created and facilitated by governments and people.
