First published in serial form between 1860 and 1861, "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is regarded as one of the all-time classics of English literature. Opening with his chilling encounter with the convict Magwitch on the wintry marches, it tells the story of the life of orphaned Philip Pirrip, always known as "Pip".

It is teeming with memorable characters, including the reclusive Miss Havisham, jilted on her wedding day, the haughty Estella, and the amiable Herbert Pocket. In the novel, Miss Havisham is a a wealthy spinster, who insists on wearing her wedding dress for the rest of her life. She lives in a ruined mansion with her adopted daughter, Estella.

Pip believes Estella is the love of his life. He pursues her. She is a beautiful girl and grows more beautiful after going to school in France. Estella represents the life of wealth and culture for which Pip strives. Since Miss Havisham has sabotaged Estella's ability to love, Estella cannot return Pip's passion. She warns Pip of this repeatedly, but he will not or cannot believe her.

Estella does not know that she is the daughter of Molly, Mr. Jaggers' housekeeper and the convict Abel Magwitch. Estella was adopted by Miss Havisham after her (Estella) mother was arrested for murder.

Mr. Jaggers, a prominent London lawyer, represents the interests of diverse clients. He represents Pip's benefactor and Miss Havisham. By the end of the story, his law practice links many of the characters.
