What is the name of the dragon in J. R. R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'?
Movies & TV

Smaug is the name of the dragon in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel 'The Hobbit'. He lives with his hoard of treasure in a mountain, which he stole from the Dwarf kingdom 150 years prior to the beginning of the novel. Thirteen dwarves, aided by the wizard Gandalf and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, set out on a quest to reclaim their gold and jewels.
Smaug was voiced by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch in Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of "The Hobbit" (2012, 2013, 2014). Many critics hailed Smaug as cinema's greatest dragon, although not much was seen of the creature in the first film. Fantasy author Sandra Unerman called Smaug "one of the most individual dragons in fiction."
In 2011, scientists discovered a new genus of southern African lizards living underground in Tolkien's native birthplace, Bloemfontein. In honour of the author, they named the genus 'Smaug'.
