"Hijab" is the Arabic name given to a female gown. Most Muslims who wear the covering call it a hijab, an Arabic word meaning “cover.” However, there are various forms of hijabs that are referred to by different names. It is traditionally worn by Muslim women in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family and it covers from the head all the way to the ankle. It is also used in the performance of obligatory prayers. It is distinguishable from a "niqab" which is a veil covering including the face as required by some Islamic sects and obligated in the Arab countries of the Arabian Peninsula such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
