It covers an area of about 155 million square kilometers (about 60 million square miles). It is larger than the total land area of the world and about 15 times the size of the United States.

Laurie Johnson Gonzalez, Of course it's a mass of ice, but definitely not as thick as those land based glaciers. Submarines have surfaced there, showing how relatively thin it is. Even Russia, banking on global warming, is thinking of claiming vast stretches of it.
