What is the name of the powerful Maya city state that was a regional power in the southern Maya region?
Copán was a religious and political center located in the Southeastern Mesoamerican cultural region part of the Mayan Empire, currently the Northern portion of Honduras, near the border of Guatemala. It was the capital city of the Southern Region for 400 years, starting in the fifth century. The city contains many temples, political buildings and statues. The valley in which the city was built was extremely fertile.
Like so many of the other Mayan cities, Copán was abandoned over a 50 year period and reclaimed by the jungle until rediscovered in 1932.
I was there in the 80s. Things NOT mentioned are the red parrots, the hand manicured grounds (no power tools) and the good shape of the ruins.
