What is the name of this flower?
The Double Chaconia (Warszewiczia coccinea var david auyong) was first discovered in the mountains of Blanchisseuse in Trinidad in 1957. It is a stable natural mutation of the Single Chaconia. It differs from the Single Chaconia because it has significantly more scarlet bracts around each flower. All Double Chaconia plants have descended from this one discovered by David Au Yong. Botanically, the Double and Single Chaconia are not different species, the double is a cultivar within the species.
This evergreen tree grows to approximately 3 meters tall and has leaves approximately 20-30cm long. Its bears this beautiful inflorescence approximately 45cm long of scarlet bracts and small white flowers in the rainy season especially August. It is a popular garden plant and can be propagated by soft stem cutting.
The Double Chaconia can be seen on the Trinidad and Tobago 25 cent coin. According to the National Emblems (Regulations) Act of Trinidad and Tobago the Chaconia, Warszewiczia coccinea, is the national flower of Trinidad and Tobago. The second highest national award of Trinidad and Tobago is called the Chaconia Medal.
