The pound sterling (symbol: £; ISO code: GBP), commonly known as the pound and less commonly referred to as sterling, is the official currency of the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, the British Antarctic Territory, and Tristan da Cunha. It is subdivided into 100 pence (singular: penny, abbreviated: p). A number of nations that do not use sterling also have currencies called the pound.

Sterling is the fourth most-traded currency in the foreign exchange market, after the United States dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen. Together with those three currencies and the Chinese yuan, it forms the basket of currencies which calculate the value of IMF special drawing rights. Sterling is also the third most-held reserve currency in global reserves (about 4%).

We never switched to the Euro and for now we are still in the EU. Regardless of either of those things we are part of Europe.

Dave Woodward, the Euro was only a notion when the UK joined what was then the EEC; initially the common currency was called the ECU, until the mid 90s when the new name was officially adopted and most of the countries joined the monetary union but not all of them did, amongst then the UK,

The Cypriot pound is used in Cyprus and is normally equal to the Pound Sterling.

Annie, are you aware England is part of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland). England, despite the ignorance of many, is not interchangeable with either UK or Britain.

Dave Woodward, if Scotland leave the Union, they shouldn't expect financial help from Westminster - but Sturgeon will probably still demand it. As a simple peasant, I can't understand why you would want to free yourself from the 'shackles' of the UK only to hitch your wagon to the shackles of the EU.

When Edward Heath tool the UK into what was then the EEC, the country declined to change to the Euro as it was still from the Pound as it was then and still is, one of the strongest currencies. Once Brexit happens, I wonder what Northern Ireland will do because they also use the Pound and they are much better off than the rest of Ireland. Scotland will be in a similar situation if they vote to leave the United Kingdom. Will they change to the Euro because if so, it is unlikely that they will get further assistance from Westminster.
