Islas Canarias, also known informally as the Canaries, are a Spanish archipelago and the southernmost autonomous community of Spain located in the Atlantic Ocean. Being an autonomous region of Spain, the official language is Spanish, as spoken in Spain.

The Canary Islands are geographically located in the African Tectonic Plate, even though the archipelago is economically and politically European, as it is part of the European Union.

The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs", a name that was evidently generalized from the ancient name of one of these islands, Canaria, presumably Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the island Canaria contained "vast multitudes of dogs of very large size"

The economy is based primarily on tourism, which makes up 32% of the GDP. Water resources are also being overexploited, due to the high water usage by tourists.
