The official language of Nicaragua is Spanish. However, there are also indigenous languages spoken by about 1.7% of the population. Additionally, a local dialect of West Indian English is used by around 0.8% of the Afro-Nicaraguan and indigenous communities on the eastern coast.

The literacy rate in Nicaragua was estimated to be 78.0% in 2010, indicating the percentage of people over the age of 15 who were literate at that time.
