In 2007, the State Legislature adopted the bolo tie as the official state tie for the state of New Mexico. In the United States bolo ties are widely associated with Western wear, and are common in the western parts of the country. New Mexico passed a non binding measure to designate the bolo as the state's official neck wear in 1987. The State Legislature of New Mexico subsequently and specifically adopted the bolo tie as the official state tie on March 13, 2007.

Customarily, the bolo tie (also called bola tie) is a type of necktie consisting of a piece of cord or braided leather with decorative metal tips secured with an ornamental clasp or slide. It is greatly hailed for its comfort and versatility. By employing several types of clasps, the bolo tie can be worn with a closed or loosened collar.
