What is the oldest arena in the National Basketball Association (NBA) league?

Madison Square Garden, colloquially known as The Garden or by its initials MSG, is a multi-purpose indoor arena in New York City. It is located in Midtown Manhattan between Seventh and Eighth avenues from 31st to 33rd Street, above Pennsylvania Station. The Garden is used for professional ice hockey and basketball, as well as boxing, mixed martial arts, concerts, ice shows, circuses, professional wrestling and other forms of sports and entertainment.

It is home to the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), the New York Knicks of the NBA, and was home to the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) from 1997 to 2017. Originally called Madison Square Garden Center, the Garden opened on February 11, 1968, and is the oldest major sporting facility in the New York metropolitan area. It is the oldest arena in the NBA.

Madison Square Garden is no longer on Madison Square. It now sits on the site of the former landmark Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan. Tearing down that magnificent neo-classic temple, honoring transportation in a grand fashion, was a monumental act of vandalism. Because of its destruction, the Historic Preservation movement gained traction and the race began to preserve notable architecture because of its historical and artistic significance.

In the early 1970s I thought it was a boxing arena, because of many highly publicised fights, such as the1st Muhammad Ali – Joe Frazier fight. And had thought that the name came from the fact that a boxing ring is in fact a square. Given that many of the biggest arenas are newer, I figured that Madison Square Garden would be correct.
