The New Testament of the Bible is the origin of the phrase: "To whom much is given, much is expected". It is found at Luke 12:48. Scholars and historians say that if you have heard this line of wisdom, you know it means we are held responsible for what we have. If we have been blessed with talents, wealth, knowledge, time, and the like, it is expected that we will benefit others.

We know people who have been given resources such as finances and time, talents such as culinary skills or musical ability, and spiritual gifts that allow for teaching or encouragement to be given. Most societies throughout the world ask for wisdom on how to get people to use their resources or commit themselves to helping others so that the world becomes a better place. Especially in regards to spiritual gifts, they are seen as different gifts. Individuals act in accordance with what their abilities allow. If it is counseling others, they do it; if it is serving, they serve; if it is teaching, they teach; if it is to encourage, they encourage others to act; if it is giving, then they give generously; if it is to lead, they do it diligently; and if it is to show mercy, they do it cheerfully.
