This Scottish writer, who died in 2013, wrote general literature under the name Iain Banks. He wrote science fiction under the name Iain M. Banks, referencing his adopted middle name, Menzies. (His father left this out when registering his birth.)

Banks breakthrough first novel was 'The Wasp Factory', published in 1984. The first book of the ten novels in the loosely connected Culture series was the 1987 'Consider Phlebas'. The series features a highly developed, interplanetary civilization, called 'the Culture'. The novels' protagonists usually come into conflict as they interact with other societies that don't accept the Cultures' outlook and ambitions.
