The word Minnesota comes from the Dakota name for the Minnesota River. The river got its name from one of two words in the Dakota language, 'Mní sóta' which means "clear blue water".

In chat rooms when I was younger, a/s/l meant someone is asking your age/sex/location. I can't even tell you how many people thought MN was Maine, Montana, or Michigan. That's fine if the rest of the country forgets about Minnesota. The southern part is boring, but northeastern Minnesota is one of the nation's best kept secrets. One of the few truly wild areas east of the Mississippi River

The name is also in the old Hamm's Beer commercial jingle, "From the land of sky-blue wa-aters". Other than being a reasonably intelligent person, I would have no trouble with this one because my parents were from Minnesota, where I still have many relatives to whom I've written many letters over my lifetime, especially to my grandma and cousin, though back when the abbreviation was Minn.
