For Maria Jones-Elliott, it had been one of the hardest pregnancies ever. Not only was she pregnant with twins, but one of the girls decided to pop out a lot sooner than the normal nine and a half months. She has taken to calling them her “little miracles,” mainly because Amy and Katie were born with an unheard of gap of 87 days.

Maria, 34, gave birth to Amy (June 1, 2012) three months prematurely and she weighed just 1lb 3oz. Maria, of Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny, remained in hospital and doctors finally induced her again at 36 weeks and she gave birth to Katie (August 27, 2012), who weighed 5lb 10oz. The time interval of 87 days has set the new world record for the Longest interval between the birth of twins, according to the World Record Academy.

Maria was not able to see Amy for the first four days after her birth. She then had to wait nearly five weeks until she was able to hold her for the first time.

The previous record for the longest interval between birth of twins was set by Peggy Lynn of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Lynn gave birth to her twin girl and boy, Hanna and Eric, 84 days apart between the years of 1995 and 1996.
