What is the third letter of the Greek alphabet?

alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta...omega best I can do from memory.

Next trivia question - "What is voiced velar fricative".

What the devil is a "voiced velar stop" and a "voiced velar fricative". Please don't just copy stuff from google without some explanation of technical terms!!!

Peter Dunkelberger, it is a consonant sound, as well a a part of the phonetics and phonology vocabulary, that is, not a phrase that may be found in the midst of chit-chat and laughter.

Thor Johnson, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau ... but somewhere in there come chi and psi and maybe phi and perhaps one or two others. I find it surprising that the letters we have in common with the Greek alphabet come in the same order. I suppose the Romans learned it from the Greeks, and we learned it from the Romans. But do other alphabetic languages have the same order? Did the Greeks pick it up from some Indo-European ancestor? Now, if only I knew what a "velar fricative" sounds like ....

Carolyn Scherr Pefley, ɣ is the answer, it’s a sound, a consonant sound in the International Phonetic Language. Also in certain modern languages. Not the same as “gamma’” in Greek.

As a scientist, I better know this. We use Greek letters a lot.
