What is the usual colour of the eggs laid by the Araucana species of chicken?
The Araucana is a breed of domestic chicken from Chile. Its name derives from the Araucanía region of Chile where it is believed to have originated. It lays blue-shelled eggs, one of very few breeds that do so.
Breed standards for the Araucana vary from country to country. It may have unusual tufts of feathers on the ears, and may be rumpless, without a tail and tail-bone; in the United States it may for this reason be known as the South American Rumpless. Both ear-tufts and rumplessness are caused by lethal genes, so not all birds display these traits. The Ameraucana breed and "Easter Egger" hybrids of the United States, which also lay blue or green eggs, both derive from the Araucana.

Have these in our hen house and yes they are free range and free to wander. They always come home to roost.

Paul Goodrow, we had Araucanas and they preferred to roost on the higher branches of the old lillypilly tree. If disturbed they would fly from there to the top of the hen house.

I moved a birds nest to a safer place and it had three little blue eggs in it. Better than under the gutter and on top the night light.

Green eggs are what my Arucanas lay, although they go on vacation from mid-November to mid-January and start lounging under the trees, resting I guess.

I have raised a lot of them, great chickens. Light blue to green eggs. We let them free range, and also give plenty of scrapes, like meat left overs and veggies.

My daughter has these chickens and the grandchildren love blue eggs for breakfast. The yolk in these are a really pale yellow.
