This is a picture of what was then called a Booze Tower, a tower of liquor barrels to be burned during the Prohibition, 1924.

During Prohibition, alcohol was confiscated by Federal Agents, and in some cases, stacked and burned, as well as dumped in streets, and down sewer drains.

The 18th Amendment created a huge underground economy to fill the thirst of alcohol for Americans, including private Speakeasies, bathtub gin, gin houses, and an incredible money machine for organized crime, including the rise of Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, the Genovese crime family, the American Mafia, the rise of the Kennedy Family fortune, and the fame of Elliot Ness (who was not a member of the FBI as often depicted).
