Trichotillomania is called the sister syndrome to dermatillomania. It is the disorder that most commonly causes a sufferer to pull out hairs from his/ her arms, legs, scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or facial hair. While these are the most known areas of focus (due to the distress it can cause a sufferer), Trichotillomania expands to the compulsive pulling of any bodily hair. Often times it crosses over with skin picking due to the fine line of relieving anxiety by a pick or pull, directly affecting a sensation on the skin.

Experts now hold that trichotillomania may be present in infants, but the peak age of onset is 9 to 13. It may be triggered by depression or stress. Owing to social implications, the disorder is often unreported. Its prevalence is difficult to predict with accuracy. The lifetime prevalence is estimated to be between 0.6% and 4.0% of the overall U.S. population. Trichotillomania is now being treated by most authorities with therapy and medications.
