Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity--one of the foundations of modern physics. He is probably the most well known and well-recognized physicists and scientists of all time.

After finishing his BS degree at the ETH in 1900, he took a position at the Swiss patent office. During this time, while completing his PhD, he produced four pieces of work which would become the cornerstones of modern physics:

1.) Theory of photoelectric effect whereby light striking a metal surface can generate an electrical discharge. This established the particle-like nature of the photon.

2.)Theory of Brownian Motion: which gives a molecular-level explanation of random motion of particles in liquids

3.)Theory of Special Relativity which explains motion at speeds approaching that of light.

4.) Mass-energy equivalence, which gives his famous equation of (E = mc^2).

He won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the Photoelectric effect and later developed the General Theory of Relativity (GR). The 2017 Physics Nobel (LIGO experiment) confirmed a central prediction of GR.

Einstein was cremated and his ashes scattered, as per his will by his family at an undisclosed location. So, there is no tombstone marking his grave nor is there a columbarium containing his ashes. According to urban legend, he whispered his last words to his secretary...who unfortunately did not understand German.
