What is xenophobia?
The fear of unfamiliar (foreign) things.
If you look this word up in a dictionary, you will find the following definitions of the phobia: fear towards strangers and fear of everything unfamiliar.

Some phobias lead to adverse implications...
As you might have already guessed, the word is of Greek origin. It was combined of two words: xenos, meaning "stranger", and phobos, meaning "fear".

easy, my father, naturalized in 1940, was interneded in 1942, with 15,000 Italian-Americans as "undersireable", along with Japanese, and including Joe DiMaggio's fathers, then serving in WWII, by FDR's exec order 9066
Today, known as a Trump supporter. Get wise America, make your hated enemies on the basis of fact, not groups.

Can;t imagine why since we only try to bomb them back to the stone age. How many do you know personally? If you can overcome your bias you could possibly begin a conversation with some. Might change your mind. Then again, might not work for you.........

Neil Hatch President Obama's term in office, his willingness to reach out to foreign governments, his ability to compromise, and his generosity of spirit have done nothing to increase xenophobia. People like Drumpf foment xenophobia. You have just demostrated how little you understand of the world and politics. I challenge you to substantiate how President Obama has added to our national xenophobia. Please use facts. They are they only things that matter. Your feelings, false impressions, and wild imaginings do not count in an intellectual exchange. Throw away your prejudices and prove your point.

Spencer Payne, yes, as Americans we must imagine how much we would welcome 30 years of proxy wars of our soil. I speak of Afghanistan, where we fought the Soviets in the 80s. Then Bush invaded there in 2002, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Hard to imagine they could do anything but hate us. We now have a candidate denouncing an entire religion for the terrorist acts of an extremely relative few of the billion plus worldwide who practice it. Rick Shomin is a racist and irrational hater. Just pity him.

The word xenos is also widely believed to be the origin of the symbol x for the unkown value in algebra

World is full of different type of people and this difference is the beauty of the world like a garden with 100s of different type flower / plant species.

Seems to be an outbteak of this recently. Didn't realize it had a fancy name. I just thought it was 'stupidity'!

Rick Shomin, you can't group a nationality of people together in calling them all "terrorists." It's just the wrong mindset of thinking in today's society.

Raashid Khan, what a beautiful thought.

ACTUALLY THE USE OF "PHOBOS" IS NOT EXACTLY RIGHT. PEOPLE ARE NOT AFRAID OF ALIENS, THEY SIMPLY DISLIKE SOME OF THEM. i DON'T KNOW THE gREEK WORD FOR "AVERSION" OR "DISLIKE", BUT THE "PHOBIA" IS USED WRONGLY IN MANY OCASSIONS.

why do i answer correctly yet get it wrong when the answer comes up?

I looked this up after I answered the question. According to the Webster dictionary, xenophobia is dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries...but I guess that could be classified as fear since "phobia" is Latin for fear.
littledick
A common spelling error. Lightning could lighten up the area. LOL
littledick
An interesting word for today's climate. It should be understood that a "phobia" is an irrational phenomenon, meaning outside the realm of reason. We seem to have quite a number of people in our society that appear to be irrational, nicht war?
