What nationality is Sigrid, winner of the BBC Music Sound of 2018 Award?
Sigrid Solbakk Raabe was born in Alesund, on Norway’s west coast, on 5th September 1996. Her family are very musical and like her older brother, Tellef, and sister, Johanne, she was destined for a career in music. Her grandmother taught her to play the piano and her father introduced her to the guitar.
Sigrid turned her hand to writing songs after her brother said he needed a new song for his band. She started her solo career in October 2013 at 16 years old with the single "Sun," followed by two further singles, "Two Fish" and "Known You Forever,". After several major European music festivals, her reputation as a talented songwriter and performer was sealed. With her powerful and versatile voice combined with her elfin looks, she seemed ready-made for pop superstardom leading her to sign to Island records. She delivered on the promise with her debut single for the label, "Don't Kill My Vibe," released in February 2017, it was unveiled on BBC Radio 1, becoming their "Hottest Record in the World," and immediately racked up millions of plays on streaming services. The equally successful single "Strangers" followed that November. The stripped-down single "Focus" arrived in 2018.
The BBC poll music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent was first conducted by the BBC in 2003, a 15-strong longlist is published each December, with a ranked shortlist and the annual winner announced the following January. Past winners include 50 Cents, Keane and Adele.
