What radioisotope is commonly used in PET Imaging?
Fluorine 18 is combined with glucose (FDG) so that when injected into a patient, it localizes in any area of metabolism.
Since most cancer cells have hyper metabolism, they readily concentrate the radioactive Fluorine 18 combined with glucose. When the patient is scanned, the radiation given off by the Fluorine18 is detected in the growing cancer cells throughout the body.

Iodine, in the form of iodide, is made into two radioactive isotopes that are commonly used in patients with thyroid diseases: I-123 (harmless to thyroid cells) and I-131 (destroys thyroid cells. RAI is safe to use in individuals who have had allergic reactions to seafood or X-ray contrast agents. i must be a little old fashion.
