What season is July in Australia?
As Australia belongs to the Temperate climate zone, it has a Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring seasonal pattern. These seasons may be described in terms of European seasons applied to the southern hemisphere in the following sequence:
Summer: December to February
Autumn: March to May
Winter: June to August
Spring: September to November

Four seasons works for temperate zone but not for parts of Australia north of the Tropic of Capricorn. In Darwin there are two seasons referred to by the Media The Wet and the Dry. Indigenous people refer to 6 seasons:Banggarreng, Yegge, Wurrgeng, Gurrung, Gunumeleng and Gudjeuk.

Don't both Northern and Southern Hemispheres have the same sequence of seasons ... Summer-Autumn-Winter-Spring ? I couldn't understand why being in a Temperate climate zone would mean that we didn't share the same seasons & in the same order as the rest of the world. It's just that we have our Summer when those in the Northern Hemisphere are having their Winter ... but Spring follows Winter in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, no matter what Climate Zone you are in. A cute trivia question still ... thanks.

John Kalugyer No it's not wrong, I live here I should know! Its winter. June, July, August are winter. Nothing to do with the solstices. And it's not Fall here, it's Autumn. It's Australia. Not America. Check the facts!

Lucky Australians - having only three months of winter, unlike our six here in Canada.

I live in Qld and quite frankly seasons are not as obvious ... we do get a cold spell for about 3 weeks in June/July the rest of the year is warm to to hot.

In New Caledonia, near Australia and where my wife is coming from, we do not say winter but fresh season. It is more representative to the reality of the temperatures.

Jennifer Dyster, same applies to a lot of the southern hemisphere. They just don't have the same temperate northern hemisphere seasons.

Jennifer Dyster, Yes ... in Darwin and places of a similar latitude, we speak of two seasons - hot and wet and hot and dry.
