What sport did the American amateur team that died in a plane crash in Poland on March 14, 1980 belong to?
LOT Polish Airlines Flight 007 was an Ilyushin Il-62 that crashed near Okęcie Airport in Warsaw, Poland, on 14 March 1980, as the crew aborted a landing and attempted to go around. All 87 crew and passengers died, including 22 members of the U.S. boxing team.
The team was traveling to Poland and the USSR to hold a series of friendly combat when the Polish IL-62 jetliner went down just a half a mile from Warsaw's Okecie Airport.
The plane was supposed to take off from New York the day before, the 13th, at 7:00 p.m. local time, but due to a dense snow storm, they would not do so until 9:18 p.m. on the 14th, once the storm had subsided and the runways were ready to be used, it was time for flight 007 to be carried out to the Frederic Chopin airport in Warsaw, Poland.
When the plane was approaching in final approach and landing maneuvers, the pilot increased the power of the engines for the final approach, this caused engine number 2 to explode and the resulting shrapnel fatally pierced the fuselage of the tail section, reaching engines 1 and 3. that were on the other side of the plane, causing them to also suffer damage, the tail rudder was also badly damaged and the aircraft ran out of control, went down uncontrollably, and finally crashed only about 3,120 ft (950 meters) away from the runway threshold.
The verdict of the Polish investigators was that a serious manufacturing defect in the Soviet Kuznetzov NK-8 engines led to the disaster.
