The traditional home of polar bears is in the Arctic, particularly the Arctic Ocean. In that realm, the bears roam on ice floes and hunt for their favorite meal, a seal.

Polar bears are possibly the only species that will hunt mankind purposely - intending to eat anything that moves. For good reason, polar bears are avoided by all who live in the Arctic regions.

Since the bears live and feed in the Arctic Ocean, they are adept at swimming in the areas of no ice, as well as pulling themselves from the water onto the ice floes. With that, their true habitat is on ice. With the continued melting of Arctic ice, polar bears continue to have problems finding enough to eat and are suffering starvation.

Germanic languages use the habitat to make the name for the bears. An Eisbär is pronounced just as English speakers would pronounce the term ice bear.
