The fear of growing old, or a hatred or fear of the elderly is known as Gerontophobia. Many people have this phobia. This term comes from the Greek γέρων – gerōn, "old man" and φόβος – phobos, "fear". Medical experts tell us that most people do not like becoming old. This is due to personal and physical limitations, illnesses, and observing the death of friends and loved ones. This dislike becomes pathological (a phobia) when it significantly limits the person’s daily functioning and/or causes harm.

Usually, the cause of gerontophobia is tied in some way to a fear of death. Death is symbolized by being elderly. Becoming older also brings one closer to fears associated with one’s own mortality. Also another cause of gerontophobia is found when there are traumatic experiences with elderly people.

Plus, gerontophobia may also cause a person to withdraw from any situation in which an elderly person will be present. Doctors additionally say, "Gerontophobia is a specific (or “isolated”) phobia, centered on non-social key factors." These experts often point out that gerontophobia stems from a subconscious over protection mechanism. As with many phobias, it may be rooted in an unresolved deep emotional conflict.
