The Turbit is a breed of fancy pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding. This is the process by which humans use animal breeding to selectively develop particular characteristics by choosing which typically animal males and females will reproduce and have offspring together.

Turbits, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, are all descendants from the rock pigeon. The rock pigeon is a member of the bird family Columbidae (doves and pigeons). In common usage, this bird is often simply referred to as a "pigeon". The Turbit is known for its peaked crest, short beak and frill of feathers on its breast.
