What type of bird is the only one that can fly backwards as well as upside-down?
A hummingbird is the tiniest bird on the planet, hardly measuring more than the palm size. It is a member of the "Trochilidae family". Hummingbirds get their name from the fact that when they beat their wings, it produces a humming sound, like that of bees.
Hummingbirds are found in the Western Hemisphere, from southeastern Alaska to southern Chile, although most live in the tropics. There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds, 12 of which summer in North America and winter in tropical areas.
Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backward, even upside down. While other birds get their flight power from the downstroke only, hummingbirds have strength on the up-stroke as well.
A hummingbird's wing is flexible at the shoulder, but inflexible at the wrist. This tiny little bird can fly great distances without stopping due to immense power.
It feeds mainly on nectar from flowers and also tiny insects. A hummingbird can survive for 10 years in captivity, but in wild it survives for 3-5 years. They don't have the ability to smell, but can hear more clearly than human beings.
