The "Shag" was a phenomenal dance craze that started at a Rhythm & Blues club called "The Pad" in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the 40 and 50's. Local teens invented the dance step that is very suited to Rhythm & Blues music. But, the "Shag" was much more than a style of swing dancing. It was a way of life for people from Virginia Beach to Florida. Some people then even refer to it as a social creed, which helped to control some of the needs of life.

Basically, it is a 6 count, eight-step pattern dance with East Coast Swing, and all the dance action occurs below the waist. True seasoned "Shaggers" take pride in adopting their own versions of the dance, each being distinctive and "smooth".

Today, it is known that "Shaggers" enjoy performing their magic to everything from gospel music to big band era songs. So, finally in the Carolina's, many "Shaggers" have now become known as "Smoothies".
