Many people all over the world enjoy eating the item known as a 'hot dog'. In the state of New Jersey in the USA, people like to eat what is called an Italian hot dog. It has been said that most visitors, who are dying to try one, will make it to the state usually in the summer months to do so. Honestly some of those who come are a bit worried that this holy grail of hot dogs wouldn't live up to the hype. Once they have the opportunity to eat an authentic New Jersey Italian hot dog, almost all find that it lives up to its reputed reputation.

The New Jersey Italian Hot Dog was born in Newark where big loaves of pizza Bread, almost like Muffuletta bread but with a hole in the middle, are made by local Italian bakeries. The bread is cut into quarters, sliced down the middle, and stuffed with a deep fried hot dog or two. Then topped with onions and peppers and a giant heap of deep fried potatoes.

The soft pizza bread is a perfect vehicle for the ingredients, holding everything together and soaking up some of the grease. This sandwich (hot dog) is a lot cleaner than one might expect. We end up with a dog that is gently fried rather than hammered into oblivion like a "ripper" and the potatoes are crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and not greasy at all. With just one bite, hot dog aficionados seem to understand what all the fuss is about.
