On November 14, 1908, Senator Joseph "Joe" McCarthy was born into a Roman Catholic family in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. He was an American politician who was a U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin. He served from 1947 until his death in 1957.

To stimulate his political career, McCarthy quit his job as circuit court judge. He joined the U.S. Marines in World War II. After a short military career, he ran as the Republican candidate for the Wisconsin Senate seat. He used propaganda and erroneous accusations against his opponent, Robert La Follette. As a result of his campaign actions, McCarthy won the election and became the Senator from Wisconsin.

Next McCarthy, whose first term was unimpressive, searched for ways to ensure his political success. When Edmund Walsh, a close friend suggested a crusade against so-called communist subversives, McCarthy enthusiastically agreed. It was a way for him to take advantage of the nation’s fanatic fear of communism. Relentlessly questioning numerous government departments, McCarthy persecuted groups and individuals for almost four years. Panic arising from the witch-hunts and fear of communism was soon called McCarthyism by the press.

McCarthy’s downfall finally began in October of 1953. President Eisenhower realized that McCarthyism needed to end. McCarthy’s behavior was finally seen as inexcusable and reprehensible within America.
