Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr. (June 2, 1930 – July 8, 1999), (Captain, USN), was an American NASA astronaut, naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and during the Apollo 12 mission became the third man to walk on the Moon. He was "short of stature, but long on wit" as someone chose to describe him. I do believe that he went "off script" with his comment as he stepped onto the Moon's surface, as NASA usually required these to be carefully scripted. It has been said that he did make those comments to win a bet.
