The national emblem of Wales is Leek. This is a vegetable that is scientifically known as Allium porrum and it belongs to the Amaryllidaceae plant family. This plant has a bulb like that of an onion and its leaves are in sheaths that are bundled into long cylinders. According to legend, Saint David ordered his Welsh soldiers to identify themselves by wearing the vegetable on their helmets in an ancient battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field.
