In September 2013, the computer game Grand Theft Auto V became the fastest selling entertainment video game of all time. It became the video that had the highest gross sales for an opening day video game product. Developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, the critically acclaimed action adventure game, Grand Theft Auto V, sold 11.21 million units worldwide within its first 24 hours in retail stores. It was able to generate over $815.7 million (£511.8 million) in revenue. Within the first three days, it reached just over $1 billion (£624.45 million) in sales. These sale figures smashed records previously held by the Call of Duty video game series.

Guinness World Records subsequently confirmed that the launch of Grand Theft Auto V established six world records. The record breaking achievements include:

1. Best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours

2. Best-selling overall video game within a one day debut period

3. Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion

4. Fastest video game to gross $1 billion

5. Highest grossing number of video game sales in 24 hours

6. Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours

Entertainment retailers later stated that the sales marked the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached these significant retail milestones."
