What was Alan Cumming's minor role in the film "Eyes Wide Shut"?
Alan Cumming's minor role in the 1999 film "Eyes Wide Shut" was that of a hotel desk clerk. When Cumming's scene is running, he is present for a very short time, and he appears to be somewhat weird. Cumming doesn't seem (in the scene) like he's scared, or frightened. If anything, he sounds almost like he on drugs.
Cumming's character is flirty with Dr. Bill Hartford (Tom Cruise); it is in keeping with the film's theme of sex being so close yet so far from Bill. For such a short role, the hotel clerk has to be absolutely astounding (believable) in the role.
The theme of the movie is whether an established love can handle or resist infidelity. So the clerk's role comes across as just another window (as a lot of short encounters proved to do for Bill) for Bill to see options. Bill is seeking answers about his sexual desire and about how every single person in the world is furthering the question at hand, can anyone truly be committed and honest. This is why the password which people use in the film is Fidelio, which translates to fidelity in Latin.
The overall film itself it about Dr. Bill Hartford's (Cruise) wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman). She admits to having sexual fantasies about a man she has met. Bill then becomes obsessed with having a sexual encounter with someone other than his wife. He will discover an underground sexual group and attend one of their meetings. He then quickly discovers that he is in over his head.
