What was Elizabeth of Bavaria's other name?
Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie (German: Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, Herzogin in Bayern; 24 December 1837 Munich – 10 September 1898 Geneva), known by the nickname Sisi or Sissi, was a Bavarian princess from the House of Wittelsbach and, after her marriage to Franz Joseph, the Austrian Empress, Czech and crowned Queen of Hungary under the name Erzsébet (Hungarian: Wittelsbach Erzsébet magyar királyné). Over the years, the Empress became increasingly depressed, thought about death, and after the tragic death of her son Rudolf (in 1889 he shot himself with his mistress Mary Vetserová at Mayerling Castle), she withdrew completely into seclusion and wore nothing but black clothes.
She gave away almost all her jewelry and restlessly hurried from one destination to another, until in September 1898 she anchored in Territet near Montreux. From there, together with her companion, the lady-in-waiting, Countess Irma Sztáray, she set off on September 9 to visit her close friend, Baroness Julia Rothschild, at the Château de Pregny. After a warm welcome, the ladies had a light meal together, accompanied by discreet orchestral music, and the ladies chatted lively about Heinrich Heine, and the Empress toasted the health of her favorite poet. The Empress was in a great mood until she saw in the guest book an entry about the stay of her deceased son Rudolf, who had visited Pregny not long before his death.
On September 10, 1898, the life of Empress Elisabeth was ended by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni while she was on her way to the port of Geneva
