Giacomo was the winner of the 2005 Kentucky Derby at the odds of 50-1. Trained by John Shirreffs for his entire career, Giacomo was in many ways a sentimental favorite for a lot of racing fans. Giacomo was sired by Holy Bull who was the morning line favorite to win the 1994 Kentucky Derby. Holy Bull finished a disappointing 12th.

Mike Smith was the Jockey for Holy Bull and Giacomo. Mike was jubilant in victory with Giacomo because it meant redemption for the great Holy Bull. The "Bull" was considered to be a working man's horse and a popular one because of his racing style and the light grey color of his coat. Holy Bull raced at many different tracks across the United States winning Stakes races to delight his fans both young and old.
