I think the author of the question meant that there is a record of the event not that the sound was literally recorded. E.g. Like the fastest recorded crossing of the Atlantic means that there is a record of the event not that the entire journey was filmed etc.

I originally dismissed the volcano because of the "recording" issue but then remembered that events have been recorded since writing was invented.

Moore, perhaps the ruptured eardrums 40 miles away? that's measurable. can likewise be said of the atomic blasts in Japan, for example? sound is a largely a change in air pressure, a mechanical force much like dropping a stone into pond: ripples radiate out from the impact, lose energy and eventually decay to nothing. 3000 miles and still audible? assume that it was heard at the onset of audibility and taking the coefficient of transmission loss through air at sea level, you can calculate back to the air pressure level and approximate the dB level . . . get back to us on that, lol.

There was a movie, "Krakatoa East of Java". The aerial pollution, soot and fallout from it was a plague for years afterward.
