What was the dance music played in the bar in the movie, "Michael"?
"Michael" is a 1996 film written and directed by Nora Ephron. It stars John Travolta as the archangel Michael whose mission from heaven takes him on a cross-country road trip with a pair of unlikely lovers (Andie MacDowell and William Hurt.) Contrary to popular depictions of angels, Michael is portrayed as a boozing, smoking slob – yet capable of imparting unexpected wisdom, charm and lady-appeal. He has had many visits to earth, and this happens to be his last permitted visit.
In the wonderful dance scene, Michael wreaks havoc at a country bar. As he enters the bar, the jukebox is playing the twangy "I Don't Care If You Love Me Anymore" by 'The Mavericks'. He slaps the jukebox and Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" starts playing. Michael starts dancing with upstretched hands and has an enchanting effect on the ladies in the bar. They all gather around him and dance right next to him. This leads to a bar fight caused by jealous boyfriends. The scene was filmed at Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas. Gruene Hall is Texas' oldest continually operating dance hall.
The movie was generally panned by critics but accepted by the public and considered a box office success. Released on Christmas Day, "Michael" finished number one at the box office that weekend, grossing $17,435,711 (roughly $3.4 million more than second-place "Jerry Maguire", which was in its third week). The total domestic gross was $95,318,203, ranking "Michael" number 16 for 1996.
