The federal minimum wage for covered nonexempt employees in 1960 was $1.00 per hour. Today, it been said that the 1960 minimum wage is equal to nearly $8.00.

U.S. federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Also, many states have minimum wage laws.

The first national minimum wage law was enacted by the government of New Zealand in 1894, followed by Australia in 1896 and the United Kingdom in 1909. In the United States, statutory minimum wages were first introduced nationally in 1938.
