John James Audubon was a foremost ornithologist and from whom today's Audubon chapters are named for. Through his excellent painting talent he documented many bird species in great detail in their own habitats. He 'banded' his first bird, the Eastern Phoebe, with silver thread to attempt to track its return to the same area in subsequent years.

The Eastern Phoebe is a drab colored little bird that often builds its nest under bridges or uses that of a swallow, robin, etc. if available. They can be seen hawking insects in fields and yards by flying from their usually low perch and fluttering their wings to scare an insect into the air to be caught. Their diet consists of wasps, beetles, dragonflies, butterflies, moths, flies spiders, ticks, as well as the occasional fruit and seeds.
