What was the first country in the world to allow women the right to vote?

New Zealand was the first country to allow women to vote in 1893. Recently, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has granted women the right to vote in 2011. The United States began allowing women to vote in 1920, after the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

South Australia, the state of my birth followed very shortly after, giving both women and Aborigines the right to vote in the 1880s . This right was then abolished with the creation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, and for women not reinstated for 20+ years. Aborigines in Australia did not get the vote until 1967, nearly 90 years after they had it and lost it.

Terry Coleman, Your comment well taken ,however to be able to vote unbiased except for age requirement and citizenship leaves New Zealand as the country of women’s first right to vote. In my opinion man or women in good standing of character including paying taxes is granted most sources available. The right to vote if you paid taxation might be slanted toward buying votes and limiting women of non head of household in exclusion. Thank you for bringing up an important issue that no doubt was changed for good reason .

The Isle of Man, where I live, gave women householders the vote in 1888, and it grew from there. The first country to give the vote to 16 year olds, we’ve been at the forefront in voting!
